bside — AI Art Recognition

Cross-platform art companion built for exhibition visitors. Point the camera at any artwork and the app identifies it instantly via a vision-AI service (object detection + similarity search), then saves it to a personal collection with provenance history. Built the React Native/Expo client and a Django REST API with Apple/Google sign-in and push notifications.

Scope

Mobile app (iOS & Android), Django REST API, AI vision integration

Stack

React Native, Expo, TypeScript, React Query, Django REST Framework, PostgreSQL, AWS S3, Firebase Cloud Messaging

Outcome

Shipped to both stores with AI-powered artwork identification and personal collection features.

The problem

Gallery and museum visitors photograph artworks but have no way to identify what they're looking at — artist, title, medium, or exhibition history. The information exists, but it's locked in wall labels they've already walked past.

The approach

  • Built the React Native/Expo client with a camera-first UX — capture triggers an AI vision pipeline (object detection + similarity search) that returns artwork metadata in under two seconds.
  • Integrated Apple and Google sign-in for zero-friction onboarding, with push notifications via Firebase Cloud Messaging.
  • Designed personal collections with crowd-sourced provenance timelines so users can trace an artwork's exhibition history.
  • Handled Play Console rollout, Android-specific camera permissions, and App Store review for both platforms.

The results

  • Live on both App Store and Google Play.
  • Sub-two-second artwork identification from camera capture to result.
  • Personal collection and provenance features driving repeat engagement.
