Built in house by qbittco, Qlip translates the physical charm of classic Solari di Udine split-flap airport boards into a modern, distraction-free digital timepiece. Engineered with pure CSS 3D physics, container-relative typography, procedural Web Audio acoustics, and 100% offline-first local persistence.
Engineering Craft in the Browser
Most digital clocks rely on either pre-rendered sprite animations or static typography. For Qlip, we wanted to recreate the physical heft and satisfying clack of classic Solari split-flap boards using modern web standards:
- True 3D Leaf Rotation: Built with CSS 3D perspectives, custom cubic-bezier easing curves, and dynamic shadow gradients that darken as the leaf drops and lighten as it rests flat.
- Container-Relative Scaling: Utilising CSS Container Queries (
inline-size and cqi units) so numerals and the AM/PM flap badge scale in exact proportion to the card container, whether viewed on an iPhone in portrait mode, a widescreen 4K monitor, or a side-by-side split screen.
- Procedural Web Audio: Rather than loading audio sample files that suffer from latency and browser autoplay restrictions, mechanical clicks and completion chimes are synthesized directly in the browser using the Web Audio API with noise buffers, biquad bandpass filters, and triangle oscillators.
- Zero-Tracking Privacy: We built Qlip with a strict zero-telemetry policy. Your tasks, timer records, and preferences stay on your device in
localStorage, complete with one-click JSON backup and import.
